Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal made South Dakota basketball history on Feb. 2.

The senior girls basketball player was selected to play in the McDonald’s All-American game on Tuesday, March 31 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Koupal is the first South Dakota girls basketball player ever selected for the prestigious all-star game. She is also just the second South Dakotan chosen as a McDonald’s All-American, joining Mitchell’s Mike Miller.

“It’s super special,” Koupal said. “I feel like it’s something that I have been working for and all the hours I’ve spent on the game truly paid off. So I think that’s really cool to see.”

A 6-foot-3 forward, Koupal will play college basketball at Nebraska. Koupal currently has 2,308 career points, which puts her top-15 on the all-time South Dakota girls basketball scoring list.

Koupal is averaging 28.4 points, 15.2 rebounds, 4.7 blocks, 4.1 assists and 2.6 steals per game this season.

The McDonald’s All-American game invitation is the latest accolade for Koupal, who also plays volleyball and is a five-time Class A state champion high jumper.

Koupal was last season’s Class A girls basketball player of the year and the Gatorade South Dakota girls basketball player of the year.

“I am super honored,” Koupal added. “But I feel like now is when I can’t get satisfied by these accolades and awards. I am just going to keep working and be who I am.”

Koupal will play on the West team, which also features Providence Academy, Minnesota’s Maddyn Greenway. Greenway is the daughter of Mount Vernon native and former NFL linebacker Chad Greenway. Greenway and Koupal’s mother, Tera, were both Mount Vernon graduates.

“I think it’s really cool,” Ashlyn Koupal said. “I think it’s just like a full-circle moment.”

Maddyn Greenway, who recently scored her 5,000th career point, will play college basketball at Kentucky.

Koupal and Greenway have established a relationship through basketball, with both competing at the Team USA Basketball mini-camp this past summer.

“She’s just a really good person, and a really good player,” Koupal said. “She’s a fun person to be around.”
